Let’s Make a Turmeric Oatmeal Bowl with Warm Berries

Turmeric Oatmeal with Warm Berries is a feast for the senses nourishing your body and soul. This delicious bowl explodes with flavour and takes only 15 minutes to make.

Start Your Day Off Right!

I find that when I take time for myself in the mornings, it has a positive effect on the rest of my day. This doesn’t stop with my AM bathroom routine but continues into the kitchen. By feeding ourselves with something beautiful and nourishing, we are able to take care of our mind and body throughout the day. Begin your day with a recipe that holds nutrients and energy in one bowl.

Fall In Love With Oats

This recipe uses whole grain oats. Carbs are the body’s primary source of energy and whole grains absorb slower and will give you a longer-lasting energy boost. Oats contain B vitamins like niacin, thiamin and folate that can work together to metabolize your energy.

The Magic of Turmeric

Golden aromatic turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties due to the curcumin it contains. In fact, it’s so potent that some studies have shown it to match the power of some anti-inflammatory drugs. You may be wondering why I’ve added pepper into this dish. Unfortunately, the curcumin in turmeric is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. As a result, you could be missing out on its advantages to health. However, adding black pepper can help. Research supports that combining the piperine in black pepper with the curcumin in turmeric enhances curcumin absorption by up to 2,000%. Learn more about turmeric in my post for How To Make A Vegan Turmeric Latte.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of whole grain oats
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of plant milk
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • Small pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tsp of coconut oil

Topping:

  • ½ cup of cranberries
  • ½ cup of blueberries
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup plus extra to serve
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • Dollop of coconut yogurt (optional) (recipe here)
  • Shredded coconut and pumpkin seeds to garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine oats, chia seeds, plant milk, water, turmeric, black pepper and coconut oil in a medium saucepan. Bring to boil then reduce heat to low over high heat and bring to a boil.
  2. Simmer uncovered for 3 to 5 minutes until you get a beautiful creamy golden oatmeal. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  3. While the oatmeal is simmering put the berries, maple syrup and vanilla into a small saucepan and gently heat.  Cook until the berries begin to soften then mash some of the berries until you get a beautiful sauce leaving some of the berries whole.
  4. Divide oatmeal between two bowls.  Add a heaping of warm berries and a dollop of coconut yogurt and more maple syrup if you like your oatmeal sweet.
