How To Make Coconut Yogurt

My “How To” series is easily becoming my favourite! This week, I’m sharing How To Make Coconut Yogurt and it’s going to forever change the way you look at yoghurt in the grocery stores.

The reason I create my own yoghurt is simple. Becoming a mother has made me extra diligent about what products come into our house.  Even though products say they are natural and organic they still have additives and preservatives to extend their shelflife. I started making my own condiments like cheese sauce, sour cream, mayonnaise, salad dressings, ketchup, date paste and even pumpkin seed butter so it was only a matter of time before I made my own yoghurt! This recipe is simple to make, I don’t why I didn’t try making it sooner.

To make your own coconut yoghurt, all you need is canned coconut milk and probiotic capsules. You can find both of these ingredients at any local grocery store. All you need to do is add the coconut milk and probiotic capsules into a glass jar or bowl, stir and cover with a cheese-cloth or paper towel. Add a rubber band around the top of it to hold it in place. Leave it in the fridge for two-days and voila! You have your very own yoghurt. Try making a plain coconut batch or add your favourite blended berries to create your own flavoured yoghurt.

The photo above is the plain coconut yogurt with my Blueberry Chia Seed Jam. You can also mix it with maple syrup, lemon, vanilla or fresh fruit. The possibilities are endless!

How To Make Coconut Yogurt

I’m sharing How To Make Coconut Yoghurt and it’s going to forever change the way you look at yoghurt in the grocery stores.

Ingredients

Scale
  • One can of full-fat coconut milk
  • 3 probiotic capsules (30-50 billion active cells)

Equipment:

  • One glass jar
  • Wooden, plastic or ceramic spoon (not metal)
  • Cheesecloth or paper towel
  • Rubber band

Instructions

  1. Open the full-fat coconut milk and pour into a glass jar and stir.
  2. Twist apart three probiotic capsules and stir the powder into the coconut milk with a wooden, plastic or ceramic spoon. Metal spoons can kill the live culture.
  3. Cover the jar with cheesecloth or a piece of paper towel and secure it with an elastic band.  Set the jar on the counter.
  4. After two days, move the jar to the fridge and let it get cold.  It will thicken in the fridge.

Note:  If your yogurt doesn’t thicken after 2 days, the probiotics you are using are inactive. If they don’t work in the yogurt they’re not working in your tummy either.
