How To Make Savory Baked Tofu

This is hands down the best Savory Baked Tofu recipe. If you are a tofu skeptic, you need to try this recipe. You will be hooked. This healthy, high protein tofu will become a staple recipe in your home. It is crispy on the outside and deliciously soft on the inside.

It’s so easy make and you don’t even have to press it. This recipe is vegan, gluten-free and can be oil free too. It is quick and great for batch cooking to save you time during the busy week.

How To Use This Tofu


Use these crispy pieces of baked tofu on:

-rice or noodle bowls

-mixed with salad greens

-in a wrap or tacos,

-on nachos

-with stir-fried vegetables

-on it’s own as a snack or with your favorite dipping sauce or my chipotle mayo

Should I Use Oil Or Not?

Some vegetable oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids. Scientists have hypothesized that eating too much omega-6 can lead to increased inflammation in the body and potentially contribute to disease. Oils are processed with very little to no nutrients. Due to this many people use oil sparingly or not at all.

The use of oil in this recipes helps the tofu go a dark golden brown and crisp up when it comes out of the oven. Using water in place of oil is an option. The tofu will be just as delicous, however the tofu will not be as dark brown as the ones used with oil. See the bottom photos for comparison.

What Is Tofu?

Tofu is a food made of condensed soy milk that is pressed into solid white blocks in a process quite similar to cheesemaking. It originated in China.

Rumor has it that a Chinese cook discovered tofu more than 2,000 years ago by accidentally mixing a batch of fresh soy milk with nigari. Nigari is what remains when salt is extracted from seawater. It is a mineral-rich coagulant used to help tofu solidify and keep its form.

Tofu is high in protein and contains all of the essential amino acids your body needs. It also provides fats, carbs, and a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. (Healthline)

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp light oil or water
  • 4 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 tbsp soya sauce or tamari (gluten-free)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut the tofu into small bite sized cubes about 1/2 inch wide.
  3. In a mixing bowl whisk together oil (or water), nutritional yeast, soya sauce, garlic powder and paprika. 
  4. Add tofu and gently stir until evenly coated.
  5. Spread the tofu evenly on the baking sheet. Bake for 25-30mins, stirring halfway.
  6. Enjoy warm or store leftovers in a sealed container for up to 5 days.
