Are All Roses Edible?

There are over 150 species of roses and they all have edible petals. They have a very aromatic, floral and slightly sweet flavor. A good rule of thumb for choosing a flavorful rose is that if it smells pleasant, it’ll probably taste good too. Ensure the roses you are eating or cooking with are organic. Roses purchased in the garden department are likely covered in chemicals and pesticides.

Health Benefits Of Roses

Roses are not just a pretty face! Like many other edible flowers, roses may offer health benefits. They are rich in antioxidants and can reduce inflammation in the body. Research has shown that rose water has antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties. It is believed to induce sleep and to have a hypnotic effect similar to that of the pharmaceutical drug diazepam. The ingestion of rose water has also been shown to have beneficial effects on the digestive system.

Do I Have To Put Roses In These Donuts?

If you are not able to get organic roses to use or simply do not care for the flavor, no problem at all. Simply omit them from the recipe. Vanilla donuts taste just as delicious or use one of my other flavors of donut from my recipe The Best Vegan Donuts.

How To Get The Perfect Rose Flavor

Flavoring baked goods with flowers takes finesse. Too much and it can taste like soap or your grandmothers perfume. Too little and you won’t detect it at all. I’ve used 3 techniques in this recipe to incorporate the delicate rose flavor, rose water, rose sugar and using edible roses in the donuts.

I used dried roses that I grew in my garden for the rose water and rose sugar. I used Edible Dried Roses from Amazon for the donuts.

How To Make Rose Water

Making rose water is very simple to make. It is just like making tea. Cover the rose petals in hot water. Let sit until the petals leech their color into the water.

How To Make Rose Sugar

  1. Remove the rose petals from the stems.  Watch out for any small bugs hitchhiking on your blossoms if your roses are fresh from the garden.
  2. Fill your glass jar with sugar and top with rose petals. Gently shake.
  3. Store in a cool dark place for at least 2 days or up to a week to infuse the sugar with the delicate floral scent.
  4. Shake the jar once a day to help evenly distribute the flowers with the sugar. It is normal for the sugar to get moist and lumpy after a day.  If this bothers you , you spread sugar on a baking sheet for an hour to dry out before adding it back in the jar and shaking it.
  5. When the scent is infused after a few days, pluck or sift out the petal and enjoy your rose sugar!

Other Uses For Rose Sugar & Water

Make extra rose sugar and use in teas, cocktails or other baking. Use in the bath or shower as a face & body scrub. Use rose water in your bath to calm the skin or use it to soothe razor burn. Pour it over your hair after shampooing and conditioning for a DIY hair rinse.

  • Yield: 6 donuts 1x
  • Category: Dessert
  • Method: Baking
  • Diet: Vegan

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup All Purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar or Rose Sugar (optional. See post)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 3 tbsp aquafaba (bean water)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp dried rose petals
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened plant milk
  • 4 tbsp rose water. If you are not using rose water replace this with plant milk

For the glaze

  • 4 tbsps aquafaba (bean water)
  • 3 cups vegan icing
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1.  Preheat the oven to 375F. Grease a heart shaped or regular donut pan if it is not silicon. Set aside.
  2. Melt the coconut oil using a microwave or in a small pot over low heat.  Allow to cool but not harden.
  3. Using a stand mixture or mixing bowl, cream together the cooled coconut oil and granulated/rose sugar.
  4. Add the aquafaba and whisk until combined with oil and sugar.
  5. Add plant milk, vanilla extract and rose water (if using) . Mix until evenly combined.
  6. Add the flour, baking powder and salt and stir gently until a smooth batter is formed.
  7. Using a small spoon, add the batter to the prepared donut pan.  Use the back of the spoon to smooth out the top.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top or insert a toothpick and if it comes out clean, they are ready.
  9. Let the donuts cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooling rack.
  10. Once the donuts have cooled, make the glaze.

 To Make the Glaze:

1.    Add all the ingredients to a shallow bowl. Stir until you have a smooth glaze. If the glaze is too thick add water a tsp at a time until the desired consistency. If the glaze is too thin add more powdered sugar. Stir in any desired food coloring (if using) at this point.

2.     Dip the top of the donut in glaze.

3.     Add garnishes while glaze is still wet.

Notes

Rose water and rose sugar is are optional ingredients.
