Cook With Your Family
Cooking together is something my entire family does together. We gather around our kitchen island tell stories or chat about our day while making a meal. We each have a role and job to do. I am in charge of creation and execution while Randy and Carrington do preparation. Carrington proudly pulls up her step stool, gets out her green cutting board and waffle knife and cuts along side Daddy.
Sharing my love of cooking with Carrington is one of my greatest joys. Along with growing a garden, giving her responsibility in the kitchen helps her gain independence and sets her up for a lifetime of better eating and wellness habits.
If you’re currently teaching your kids how to use a knife, this could be an excellent opportunity to have them help cut their own sticks or even simply construct the cube to teach them color patterns and fine motor skills.
Knife Safety with Children
Carrington was able to properly hold a knife and do a basic slice by 2 years old. Now, almost 3 she can cut smaller more uniform pieces of soft vegetables or fruit. Teaching her this skill took a lot of care, instruction and lots of reinforcement. We first started her off with this Plastic child safe knife set.
If you want to teach your child how to properly use a knife there are very import guideline and safety measures that must be in place. Find a guide to knife safety here.
Do I Have To Make Something With These Fruit Fingers?
If you don’t have the time to put this cube together, no problem. These Fresh Fruit Fingers would look just as lovely place on a plate with the Vanilla Lime Yogurt Dip. Fruits are an extremely versatile ingredient. There are many ways to make them new and fun. What I enjoyed most about making this cube that it uses fruits like cataloupe and honeydew that kids don’t tend to graviate toward. If the fresh fruit fingers aren’t for you, try making the Vanilla Lime Yogurt dip on it’s own. It will pair perfectly with all fruits.

How To Cut Fresh Fruit Fingers
Scroll below to discover the 3 quick steps to make your own Fresh Fruit Fingers with Vanilla Lime Yogurt Dip. A quick tip: the knife makes all the difference in cutting smooth lines. I use a chef’s knife like this one from Amazon.
Remove the peel from the melons. Using a chef’s knife cut the fruit into 1 inch thick slabs. From the slabs cut the melon into equal 4-sided, 4-inch sticks.
