  • Yield: 4 cups 1x
  • Category: Sauce
  • Method: Stovetop
  • Diet: Vegan

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 sweet, tart apples such as Gala, Honey Crisp or Granny Smith
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup (more or less to taste)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and dice apples into 2 inch pieces.
  2. Combine apples, water, lemon juice, cinnamon and maple syrup in a large saucepan. If your apples are very sweet you may not need to add sweetener.
  3. Cover and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Continue simmering, stirring occasionally for 15 minutes or until apples are tender and falling apart.
  4. Remove pot from heat. Using a potato masher or a wooden spoon, mash apples until they reach the desired consistency. For a smoother sauce blend in a food processor.
  5. Taste sauce and add more maple syrup, lemon juice or cinnamon if necessary.
  6. Serve apple sauce warm or chilled. Store cooled sauce in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Freeze for up to two months.
