Tools You Need To Make Brownie Donuts
All that is required to make these donuts is a food processor (or blender) and donut molds. That is it! If you don’t own donut molds buy the ones I use here or substitute muffin tins.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Black beans
- Ground flax
- Hemp Seed
- Coconut oil
- Raw cocoa powder or cacao
- Coconut sugar
- Baking powder
- Vanilla extract
- Salt

What’s The Difference Between Cacoa or Cacao Powder?
Cocoa and cacao are often confused for one another. They look similar and are spelled almost identical but there is indeed difference. Most people are familiar with cocoa powder. It’s commonly used for baking or in hot chocolate.
Recently, cacao is rising in popularity as people begin to become more health conscious and shift towards more natural and vegan diets. So what is the difference between cocoa and cacao (besides the spelling)? The answer is in the way it’s heated.
Both cocoa and cacao powder begin as beans from the cacao plant. They have been separated from the fatty part of the bean known as cocoa butter. These beans are harvested and fermented to develop flavour and texture. The more common cocoa is processed at a much higher temperature and often contains added refined sugar and dairy. The result is a less bitter, slightly darker powder that has lost some of it’s nutritional value.
On the other hand, cacao powder is made from fermented beans that have not been roasted. The beans are processed at low temperatures and then milled into a powder. The result, is a powder that’s bitter in taste and higher in nutritional content. It is often packaged as vegan as it has been minimally processed with no additives.

Ingredients
For the brownie donuts:
- 1 415ml or 1 1/2 cup black beans.
- 2 flax eggs (2 1/2 tbsp ground flax + 6 tbsp water)
- 3 tbsp coconut oil, melted
- 2 tbsp hemp seed
- 3/4 cup of cocoa or cacao powder
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 heaping cup coconut sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
For the icing (optional)
- 2 cup icing sugar
- 2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
- 1–2 tbsp plant milk
- sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F
- Combine ingredients for the flax egg in food processor and pulse a few times until combined. Let sit for 5 mins until gel starts to from.
- Meanwhile lightly grease donut moulds. If they are flimsy place on a baking tray.
- Combine all remaining ingredients in food processor. Blend for 3-4 mins or until smooth and creamy scraping down the sides as needed.
- Use a spoon or pour into donut mould. Bake for 40-45mins or until tops are dry. The insides will remain soft and gooey.
- Allow to cool completely before handling as they will be tender and delicate.
- Enjoy plain or mix together ingredients for icing in a bowl. Dip the face of the donut into the icing. Decorate with sprinkles (optional).
